Building on slopes considered too steep can lead to soil erosion,
loss of hillside vegetation, and damage to fragile wetland and
marine ecosystems. Appropriate site selection should generally
locate more intensive development on gentle slopes, dispersed
development on moderate slopes, and no development on steep slopes.
It is important to acknowledge that the decision to build on a
site with a moderate to steep slope will consume more energy and
natural resources during construction. Maintenance of retaining
walls and storm water management infrastructure will also increase
costs over the life cycle of the developed area.
