The layout of buildings is affected by many factors. The
relationships to road layout, proximity to mission related
facilities, community commercial activities, and/or open space are
some of the drivers for orientation of facilities. The cultural
context of the installation location or slated occupants can also
have an impact on the layout of facilities. Sustainable goals ensure
that the designer is mindful of the development footprint which
could move the design toward multiple stories depending on the size
of the site. Perhaps the largest influence would be
site adaptive considerations
such as
wind, sun, topography, geology, and climate. In general the
following objectives should be met for the sustainable layout of
buildings on a site.
- Site buildings to be able to integrate passive and active
solar strategies.
- Take advantage of natural ventilation.
- Maximize daylight use.
- Investigate potential impact of future developments adjacent
to the site that may impact facility layout (e.g., solar,
daylighting,
ventilation, etc.).
