Asset management is an interdisciplinary philosophy governing the
utilization, investment, and management of assets. Air Force Civil
Engineering has always managed assets for the Air Force however the
new philosophy focuses on the management of activities in an
interdisciplinary fashion. Traditional Civil Engineering stove pipes
of business lines will be integrated through this approach yielding
a greater leveraging of information for decision makers.
Civil Engineering is deploying asset management because of the
fiscal pressures of today’s environment. The Air Force is facing
critical budgetary short falls and must adjust its management
philosophy to leverage existing investments in facilities, personnel
and information to become a more effective steward for Air Force
Installations.
The goal of asset management is to improve the overall management
effectiveness for Air Force assets both natural and built. As part
of the Natural Environment, sustainable sites represents the type of
new thinking represented by asset management as a better management
strategy than traditional practices.
